Residential Home for Six People with High Mental Health Support Needs

PURPOSE

Holmdale Terrace empowers people who have experienced long-term mental distress and have become institutionalised, to move on and live in the community with minimal support; by enabling them to discover their dormant skills and deploy them in managing themselves in domestic, social, medical situations, in employment and education.

THE HOUSE

Holmdale Terrace opened in 1990 and is a registered care home located in Stamford Hill comprising two semi-independent ground floor flats and four individual bedrooms. There are two kitchen/lounge areas, toilet and two bathrooms, one of which has been adapted to provide a walk-in-shower. It is easily accessible by bus and rail. Local facilities include a chemist, supermarket and post office.

CARE/ SUPPORT PROVIDED

Based on the Care Programme Approach, allocated Keyworkers develop a meaningful and trusting relationship with the residents within which their needs, hopes and plans are assessed. With support, residents acquire daily living skills such as cleaning, budgeting, and cooking. Further assistance is provided to enable residents to make links with the community and access its resources. These may include spiritual organisations, community centres, education, training and employment opportunities.

Residents are encouraged to follow beliefs and practices based on their religion and culture and all have the opportunity to take an annual holiday.

SERVICE USER INVOLVEMENT AND CONSULTATION

There is a weekly meeting led by a service user, during which the running of the home, relationships, current affairs and other issues are discussed.

One resident is a representative on Tulip's Client Involvement Group and another regularly submits poems to the client monthly newsletter. Feedback is encouraged via CPA reviews, suggestions or complaints and an annual survey is conducted.

ENSURING QUALITY

Fortnightly management supervision is provided to all staff. Fortnightly clinical supervision is conducted by an external consultant focusing on clinical and practice issues. Senior Management conducts monthly inspections. External monitoring is provided by announced and unannounced inspection visits from the National Care Standards Commission  (NCSC) and Haringey’s contracts department.
